About Me:
My name is Shelley, and I pretty much live in the water! I began this fish-like life as a young child, and have continued it throughout my life.
My multiple certifications and lengthy years of experience, as described below, have allowed me to learn and incorporate a variety of techniques into my swim and diving lessons. I have worked with ages ranging from 6 months old to older adults. I also have experience with those with special needs - both physical and/or cognitive. My background in physical therapy, psychology, education, and ABA methods further helps with my techniques, all of which I alter to fit the individual I am working with!
Experience:
I began swimming competitively with Team Suffolk when I was a child before taking up springboard diving as a teenager. I dove for my high school team and then Binghamton University’s NCAA Division I team. At Binghamton, I studied psychology, with a focus in Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) techniques, and Creative Writing. Throughout that time, I lifeguarded and taught swim lessons. Additionally, I returned to helping coach club and high school diving teams since coming back to Long Island in 2008. Working at an integrated preschool as well as various pools on Long Island have helped me hone my skills with different ages and different students.
In 2018, I completed my Doctorate of Physical Therapy at Stony Brook University and have worked in this field since 2019. This advanced knowledge of the musculoskeletal system and how it works and moves, as well as concepts such as motor learning (how people and their bodies learn to move), continue to augment my teaching.
Aquatic facilities or teams worked at:
Half Hollow Hills School District (2001-2003; 2008-2019)
Westbury School District (2011-2019)
St. Anthony's Prep (diving)
